April 2011 Update

Replacement Home (DMNH) Update

Work on the replacement home is moving ahead with occupancy scheduled for September. At the onset of construction, it was our intent to become LEED certified (Leading in Energy and Efficiency Design). We are pleased that we will achieve LEED certification. This will be achieved through a variety of ways - use of green cleaning products, design of our building, scent free policy, water use reduction e.g. low flow toilets, use of low omitting materials, use of daylight and views. We are working with our design and procurement team for purchase of furniture and effects.

To prepare for moving day, we have established a Transition Team who are looking at all details of the move to ensure that the move is as smooth and easy as possible for our Residents, families and our staff.

Team membership currently includes management, staff, DMNH Board Volunteers, and will change as needs are identified. A communication sub-committee has been formed to ensure everyone is updated on a frequent basis. As well, placement and buddy teams have been established with these teams looking at all aspects of our Resident care and needs. A moving team has started identifying teams for the physical move.  During the summer our staff will be oriented and trained to the new building and systems.

We are planning an information session for early June for families; you will be notified when a date is confirmed. Family members and the community are also encouraged to attend our Annual General Meeting on June 29th beginning at 7 p.m. at Duncan MacMillan Nursing Home, 3rd floor.

We are seeking family involvement for the moving day.  We are planning a breakfast at the existing home as a way of saying goodbye, followed by a luncheon at the new home. We will be asking family members and/or volunteers/staff to be with the Resident during the move, and to be on hand to greet the Resident at the new home to assist in getting the Resident settled.  We will be providing more details over the coming months.

Staff, Residents, families, volunteers and our Board are very excited about our new home.  We will be very busy over the coming months with move plans and details that are involved in such a move.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us.  You may contact:  Cathy Logan at 885-3631 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
